- חָפַש(b. h.) (to be white, cmp. Arab. ḥafaš decorticare, cmp. חֲפַר II, to be free (cmp. חוֹר II). V. next w. Pi. חִיפֵּש to deliver. Pesik. R. s. 8 (ref. to אֲחַפֵּשׂ, Zeph. 1:12) לא תהא קורא סמי״ך אלא שי״ן אֲחַפֵּשוכ׳ read not the word with Samme but with Shin, ‘I shall deliver ; Yalk. Zeph. 567. Pu. חוּפָּש to be set free. Kerith. 11a (ref. to Lev. 19:20) מכלל דהוא ח׳ this implies that he (her betrothed) has been liberated, is a freedman.
